Buying a bed

Options
I'm looking to buy a bed; ideally a superking but king will do, probably divan style with as good a quality mattress as 600 to 800 pounds will get me.

However, I know very little about what I should be looking for. I've found some decent looking beds but with no reviews on them I'm very hesitant to buy.

Can anyone advise me on good brands, good retailers or even a specific bed?

Thanks very much :)

  • We bought a bed a while back. My advice is to be sure you get a pocket sprung, NOT continuos spring. And then simply get a reasonable make with as many springs as you can get. We bought a new mattress (superking) for about £450. Not the cheapest mattress, but also a long way from the most expensive. But the best money we have ever spent! Only problem is when you sleep anywhere else you will moan about the bed!

    Something like this:

    Or this:

They look the same, both pocket sprung, but I bet the difference in price is additional springs. Worth it imo.
  • Thanks procrastinator; did you buy your bed from Argos? If so, how were they with delivery and things?
  • I think it was homebase in the end (but argos and homebase are the same company) as we had an extra discount voucher to use with them.

We are only a sample of one, but delivery was fine for us, placed the order, spoke to them the next day, we had a decent choice of dates, the mattress was well wrapped up, so even though there were marks on the wrapping, the mattress itself was in perfect condition. They helped us up the stairs.

Genuinely, that is probably the best £450 we have ever spent. You spend about 1/3 of your life in bed and having a comfy mattress that lets you sleep well makes such a difference. Maybe have a read of that which guide as it may be another mattress suits you better, but for us, pocket sprung all the way!
  • Yeah I think it's definitely pocket sprung for us too. We have (what I think is anyway, it came with the apartment) a continuous coil mattress and it's awful; springs popping out here, there and everywhere. And I don't like the sound of memory foam if it makes it difficult to move because I move alot before I eventually fall asleep!

Definitely haggle. Bed shops are often grouped together so you can hit them all in one go. I got a price from one and went to another saying I want better bed for less than this, and sure enough I got that. I then went to a different branch and got a bit more knocked off if I bought it through them! :D

Can't wait for mine to arrive now and after 3 weeks on an air bed it is going to be awwwwesome!

    Try an independent bed shop.

I bought a new bed last year and the salesman asked plenty of questions and then pointed out the best ones in my budget. Then he left me to spend as long as I wanted laying on them all, and he encouraged me to lay as I would if I was going to sleep, to make sure it was comfortable and definitely the right bed for me. There was no pressure and I could have laid around the shop as long as I wanted!

If you're in the North East, it was Sunderland Bedding Centre.
Here I go again on my own....

  • I just bought a Sealy orthopaedic bed from Tesco, arrived yesterday. Was really impressed by the bed, the service from Sealy, and it had good reviews.

From past experience, Where are the best places to buy a bed on installment??

I don't know about others but i sure can't buy a bed and mattress in one go, eek! Especially if you want it to last, theres no point spending a few hundred on a naff bed and mattress when that money could go to a better quality one which will have a longer life. Maybe that's just me :)

Ive been looking at a few in Bensons for Beds as tbh there's not many places who do interest free installments (i was quite shocked! where do people get their money to pay it in one payment these days?? i'm sure not getting a loan!)
