Santander overdraft charges the best?

Sorry if this is elsewhere or in the wrong place!!
I am wondering why Santander is still coming out as top on comparison websites when the overdraft rates are so ridiculous. My husband has just spoken to customer services and they have refused to remove the charges as he has been overdrawn so.... tough, basically.
I hate that they chose to take this feature from their emalgamation with Alliance and Leicester.
We have a joint current account, mortgage, payment protection, ISA, esaver and my husband's account with Santander and have always loved them but this is making him want to move everything away.
I know that in an ideal world we wouldn't go into overdrafts but we do. It's a necessity when you need to eat weekly but get paid monthly. And for those who don't go into it - well done you:T.
I have an account with HSBC who have rubbish customer service in the local branch (positively huffy) but I have today received my charges statment and it's only £1.40 and I've been in the OD for a couple months now - it's proportional. Sensible. So why is Santander still considered the best current account? I know it pays 5% apr but it's not worth anything if you're being charged £7.50 a pop for being £5-£20 OD for a few days.
Am i being thick? is it a good OD rate?
Thanks muchly

Santander used to be competitve. They charge 50p a day for using their OD. I've left them for Natwest.0
