Cat flap in new build french doors

  • To be fair I came on here to ask for advice about a cat flap not to have snide remarks made about the size of my house which I am actually excited about and more than happy with (cat flap issue aside). Plus does it matter if it is boxy? I'm the one that has to live there!!

Thanks to all those that have made helpful comments. :T

I'm sorry if you think I'm being rude. I probably was being more flippant than I should have been.

You did ask about a cat flap - but I'm wondering where you'll end up putting it.

A cat flap creates a draft - our cats slide through sometimes and this makes the catflap stick open. It's a nuisance when it's behind a curtain in the hall in winter - but in your lounge it's going to be a cold draft!

If there's no side wall then is there a back wall you could do a tunnel through? But I would take advice from the builders on site now as to where to put it.

If the front door opens on to a road or close to one you might not want your cat flap on that.

Is there no back door or back room window you could have chopped up instead?

The smaller the pane of glass that gets messed up the better in terms of security.

I will. Just as the cat will presumably have to have a cat flap in the front door.

I assume it has a front door.

I am a little confused as to why you are posting on here? Are you just trying to be rude and upset me? If so mission accomplished.

I had the cat flap in the living room of my flat and never had a problem with a draft, I only have one cat so there isn't much traffic going through it. Plus in the winter he likes to be in in the warm anyway. It has to go in the French doors as far as I can see there isn't another option. I have started getting quotes from companies now anyway so I think it can be considered case closed.
  • There is no problems with putting cat flaps in glass as long as there fitted correctly as for draughts you wouldnt really notice unless it was just left wide open I have done a few cat flaps with no problems and you can put them in glass or the door panel whichever you prefer it is always best to put cat flaps into safety glass if you want 1 in glass this will add strength to the glass as normal float glass may crack.

Glass at cat height would have to be safety glass anyway.

Have just been looking at the SureFlap and it says it can be fitted to double or triple glazed doors

There's a video on their website which shows it fitted in glass doors

Is activated by your cat's microchip so keeps other furries out, it looks like a really good product

The downside is it's about £70 for the flap, compared to about £20 for a decent 'normal' catflap

If the glass is over 800mm from the floor it does not have to be safety glass as I know a few people who have had them fitted in kitchen windows but I would always use safety glass because of the risk to breaking.

I'm buying a house that sounds exactly like yours OP and I was planning on putting a cat flap in the patio doors of the living room too. I've seen that it can be done, but have no idea how much. Would you let me know what sort of quotes you get?

I'm very excited about my house too and wouldn't mind any snippy comments about boxes. My living room is big and the patio doors only make it light and beautiful, which I imagine is just like yours xx
