Car insurance excess

hi, if i have an accident which is my fault, do i have to pay excess even if i dont make a claim for my own car.
i have searched already on google and got confused, some say its only when you claim for your own car. if 3rd party claim it off your insurance you dont have to pay any excess and others say you have to pay it regardless of whether you make a claim for your own car or not.
can somebody who has gone through above situation shed some light on this matter.
bytheway i m asking this because fully comp insurance is cheaper than third party if voluntary excess is 1000.but i would never make a claim for my own car if i dont have to pay excess:D

If a thrid party claims against you then yes you have to pay your excess even if you don't claim for your car.

How about not equating death with stopping?0 -

Nonsense, an excess only has to be paid if you are claiming on your insurance policy for damage to your car.
To qualify that, I vaguely remember one of the super cheap firms thinking about putting an excess on third party claims but I’m pretty sure nothing ever came of it and, in fact, I suspect it would be illegal under RTA & EU law0 -

Unless underwriters impose an "all section" excess or similar, which although rare on private motor insurance (they are generally applied to high risk or very unusual cases) are not unheard of.

It's not illegal at all. It's really common in Fleet business, in fact.0 -

It's not a case of picking a poster to "believe" as none of us can give you a definitive answer. The only way to find out is to ask the relevant insurer/read the full policy terms carefully.0 -
The excess only applies to any claim you make for your own car.
If a third party makes a claim, you don't pay any excess. You will lose your ncd, and have to declare the fault accident though, but you would with tpf&t.
(There are a few specialist companies that will make you pay for any claim (including third party), but normally they are for very high risk, such as returning drivers with drunk driving disqualifications etc, who won't get mainstream insurance.)
We have a £400 car insured fully comp with a £1000 voluntary excess, it halved the premium.0 -
I just checked my insurance - I'm with Tesco - and on mine the excess doesn't apply if it's only a third party claiming against you. It does apply if claiming for loss or damage to the vehicle, or stereo systems, possessions, glass claims etc.
If you're with a mainstream insurer, look up their website and you'll probably find the policy booklet available for you to peruse and give you the correct answer!Indecision is the key to flexibility
