Unknown Credit Card payment (not a charge, a credit!!) on account?!

in Credit cards
Hi all, hope someone can help!
Rather unusual in that my problem is not being charged for something I never bought, but rather a payment has went into my account that has basically cleared my card and put me in credit!
Thing is, I have not made this payment to my credit card, I use one account for these transactions and a) I have no recollection making it b) its certainly not an amount I would make in one payment c) I can't trace where/how its comes from.
I spoke to the Credit Card company and they cant tell me where the payment has come from - they have suggested i typed in wrong amount when paying online, or its a balance transfer - its neither, I know. They also said that after 30 days there is nothing legally they can do if its their error to get the money back, is that correct? Its just over 30 days But as I said it also puts me in credit and she suggested have this money returned to me, but its not mine, and as much as I would happily have free cash Im worried it will come back on me. She suggested speaking to their accounts dept but she was rather non-plussed about it (the operator joked I should treat it as an early xmas present!) Im worried as im sure its not my payment and some error instead, and it will come back to bite me so any help/information on what may have happened, or if its correct they cant claim it back now, would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance

I would very much doubt that the information that there is nothing they can do after 30 days is correct. I would imagine that this payment has been credited in error to your card and somewhere somebody is about to get a nasty surprise when they find that their payment has gone missing. They will complain, the credit card company will discover the error, debit your account and credit the correct account.0

Apologies for late response, it's with Tesco Bank. The status of the credit is still the same, by the 25/10/11 or so it will be 60 days. The customer service lady did say they audit every 30 days so any error should have been picked up before my last post - therefore I'll wait the 60, and indeed the 90 day mark. I think at that point I will contact them again if nothing has changed and confirm if they are happy - if they are then fine, I'll take it as good fortune - every little helps!0

That's odd indeed ... and I've just had the same thing ... a credit payment to my card of almost £5000 taking my balance to -£4900 ... then a couple of days later a CHAPS transfer from my card to what appears to be a barclays account I haven't used for about 3 years (if the funds transfer notice I received through the post from barclays is anything to go by).
Did you ever get anywhere with find out what happened, or a resolution ??0
