Council tax reminders and mrs`s paye demand

Hi everyone.
Been reading through a few posts to see if anyone has had the same problems.

We moved into a rented property 3 months ago. We filled in the form to tell them we had moved in and waited for a council tax bill to turn up.

I then recieved a reminder last mionth which i paid the day i got it.

Ive now recieved another reminder today which ive paid. This is my final reminder before i have to pay the whole year upfront.

Why am i not recieving a bill before they issue a reminder? I know i can set it up DD but why should i have to? Sometimes i have to juggle money about before i can pay a bill and if the money is not there when the DD coimes out i will get charged.

It wouldnt be a problem if when you logged into theyre website and entered your reference it told you how much you owe but it doesnt. You have to enter the amount you want to pay.

What im really getting at is im not recieving a bill to tell me how much i owe before i go online to pay it. Then i get a reminder and now ive run out of those. I wont be able to afford to pay it all in 1 go.

I will phone tomorrow and set up a DD if i have to but whats the deal here?

Also my mrs was one of the lucky ones to recieve a £1500 paye tax bill due to messed up tax codes etc from 2007-2010. Weve sent off one of those template letters asking for a waiver as ` they failed to act on information they already had ` Has anyone got anywhere with this?

Many thanks

Have you double checked the council is sending your bill to the correct address? They sometimes get confused and send bills addressed to the correct person, but to a previous occupier's new address, or to a varient of the address but slightly wrong? Eg Flat 8A, 48 Station Road and the bill just goes to 8A Station Road.

Phone them up and ask for the full details of the bill, account number, what's due to be paid when etc. Then ask to set up a direct debit immediately. You should get confirmation of the set up of the direct debit within a few days. The payment dates if you pay by direct debit can be later in the month than if paying by other methods. Keep an eye on it though, and make sure the payments do go out by direct debit.

  • Our council only sends out a single bill - the onus is on the billpayer to pay up and ensure this is done on time, every time, if you use the monthly payments option - the council does not have to send you a bill every month AFAIK once they have sent the initial bill; if you don't pay on time, they will send a reminder and ultimately ask for the whole amount up front if you keep missing payments.

Agreed. You only receive one bill. I assumed from your initial post you were still waiting for that one bill. But no, they won't send you a bill per month, it's just one per year. It's normally the same amount per month as a whole number of £'s, with either the first or last payment amended to make it match to the correct total.

Statutory billing is for a maximum of 10 monthly payments with the odd amount as the first payment.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

I have a reminder on my phone, for about a week before payment is due, and also on my online calendar. That's the only way I can keep on top of making monthly payments if I'm not doing a DD.

PS Martin's 'tart alert' service would also do the job!
