2nd hand winter tyres

We've been running winters for 10+ years and change them when they get down to 3 or 4mm. If they are at that stage at the end of winter I do leave them on into the summer and let them wear lower. My gut feel is they do wear quicker in the warmer weather but no measurements to confirm.
In day to day summer driving they grip reasonably well compared to the summer GSDs but what they do lack is the sharp "on rails" response that the summers give.
A few years go I had a faulty Conti winter and talking to their tech support guy he runs winters all year round on his MG TF but then he does live near Birmingham and I guess he gets tyres cheap.
On the storage side, I think some of the tyre chains are now doing storage, don't know what it costs but might be an option for you.0
