Job Interview with Tesco... what to wear?

I had a phonecall this morning asking me to attend an interview on Wednesday at Tesco for a P/T Merchandising assistants job I applied for months ago, and I don't know what to wear!
I have a Grey pinstripe skirt suit, but feel this might be slightly too formal. With my current job, I just turned up with my Chef Whites as I was expected to start there and then!
Would plain black trousers, shirt and kitten heels be acceptable? Or do you think they would expect me to be suited and booted, I've never worked in this kind of retail enviroment before, and don't really know what to expect..
Any tips greatly appreciated :)

I go suited and booted even for interviews for lorry driver posts although for those I also take a set of drivers overalls and boots in case they want to do a driving test.

I have never failed to get a job I applied for and at one, I got told by the owner of one haulage firm that he was glad I had turned up in a suit because if I'd turned up as most had I'd not have made it through the door. It was a company that prided itself on its appearance and wanted smart drivers because they were the only face to face contact a client had with them in many cases.
  • Head office or in store, they would expect you to look smart. If you have the suit then I would suggest wearing it. Even if it's a dept that is quite casual in dress code - that is not until you have the job!
  • Suit it is then!!

Thank you very much for your help!
    :D
  • It's only very rarely that you can be oversmart for an interview.
I used to interview for drivers and although didn't expect them to turn up in suits (a lot wouldn't even own one), any that did showed that they thought about being in an interview. Even if you do look a little overdressed, it will be your interview performance that will be the key thing. If you feel really unsure once you turn up and see a very casual office, when you are introduced just say, with a smile "I hope that I'm not too overdressed", and use that as a good ice breaker.

Suit all the time, i wouldnt want to give interviewers the wrong impression. Oh make sure you remember to put your tie on, i had an interview during the summer and only realised about my tie when i was half way but decided to not bother going back for it and if asked about the tie id apologise and say i felt it was too hot for a tie. Just noticed you say skirt so your a female so make sure your smart.
  • Appearance is everything, it's the first thing they'll notice about you. Look the business and they'll know you mean business :)

    Closed in shoes!

I had a Tesco application for customer services and wore full suit and pumps. (My usual interview get up, I don't do heels!)

They wanted us to do a work 'test' (which we weren't told about before) and got told that we had to wear fully enclosed shoes (not just toes and heels like mine where) and so I could not continue the interview and was asked to leave, along with 5 others! Only 6 completed the interview!!! Lol

But yeh when I got told about the interview I did the whole 'do I need to bring anything specific and is there anything I should know' routine and was told it would just be a chat with the manager.

    Not impressed!

Had a similar situation where we had to get changed into whites for a trial (wasn't Tesco) when they never told us before. So not everyone wore smalls like they might have done had they known that they would have to be getting changed!

    Lovely suit!

P.S. in your forum signature you spelt you're wrong.
And I Have The Right To Think Your Stupid,

    That's embarrassing...

OP - Definitely definitely go suited and booted! You can hardly ever overdress for an interview! It'll be worth it :)
