Need to borrow £3,000
Options
Hi,
I'm new to all this. Ive just bought my first house. Ive never borrow any money etc. Just my student loan.
However i have money saved up to renovate my new house, bathroom, kitchen etc.
However i need to get the windows replaced asap for dbl glazed ones. This will cost just under £3k.
So id like to get some sort of loan for this amount. Obviously i'd like to do it the cheapest way. Ive got no credit cards etc. But would be willing to try anyway possible. Whats the best way to do this?
Thanks for any help whatsoever,
Paul

ok.
Ive been reading this site all day lol.
Decided the thing to do is.
Buy the windows with a Sainsburys Platinum card. 0% for 12 months.
Then pay back as much as i can each month, lowering the debt.
Then do a balance transfer to Barclay Card 0% for 12months and carry on so hopefully not paying ANY interest whatsoever.
How does this sound??
How quick can you get these cards? I assume my credit rating will be good?!!
Anyone help?>?

Good plan but don't pay back as much as you can, pay the minimum payment, and pay any extra into a savings account - Cahoot do 5.5%, soon to be 5.65%, but I think that is closing soon. Next best I think is ING, but someone will correct me if I am wrong.
When you can't get any more 0% use the cash in the savings account to pay the Credit Card, and pocket any interest.0 -
You may find that the DG company don't take credit cards so perhaps a card with fee free cheques (Mint?) or an Egg card where you can pay off an overdraft could be required.0

Get on the electoral register as your credit rating will suffer without beng on it. Get hold of your credit reports as they may have you listed at your old address and have weird stuff you can't imagine on them.

My Sainsbury's card took three weeks to come through.0 -
Before you replace the windows, check the advice of DiY programmes & estate agents.
Quite often ORIGINAL windows will add value, so maybee a local carpenter or window renovation firm, could take a look, first.
& even if you do decide on new ones, take care to make sure the design suits the house. Even the number of opening windows in each frame, needs to give a balanced effect. Some companies charge extra, for an opener!!
When you sign the order/contract, make sure you pay your deposit, minimum £100 with a credit card, to give you protection, in case something goes wrong. Also where it says 'balance to be paid by ????? method, make sure you write in 'CREDIT CARD', or they will insist on cash/cheque!

Don't plan on Barclaycard giving you a decent credit limit, they haven't been very generous with this 0% offer0

Pldd4,
If you're going to go down the credit card route, you may be better applying to Virgin / MBNA.
Firstly from your post you make it sound as if you'll do a BT to Barclaycard in 12 months time - not possible unless they do this offer again, as the interest-free period finishes in Aug 05.
MBNA generally give higher limits, so if your credit rating is OK you may fare better with MBNA. Also MBNA will transfer money to your bank account if necessary. though there is a standard charge for BTs with them - 2% of amount transferred, up to a maximum of £35 - but if you get a 0% for 9 months this may be waived.
There is a discussion about when fees are applied elsewhere in this section!
Hope you get it sorted soon!
PS - I also find Virgin require a much smaller minimum monthly payment than many other cards, which is great if you are struggling to pay or want to save as much as poss in the interest-free period).0
