If they ring you just say you can't speak to them and put the phone down. It's that simple.
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)
  • Or, just a thought, ask them what they actually want to know?! If it's a friend, and all they want is confirmation that (s)he actually works there, what's the harm in telling them that? If they're after a guarantor that would obviously be a different story, but a reference won't have any impact or liability on you and could help your colleague out.

Isn't the point that the OP's colleague has told her nothing about this, and some company who claim they are Cheque Centre Ripoff & Leggit are phoning the OP.
Why would the OP want to have a conversation with someone claiming to be someone about somebody else and something else that the OP knows nothing about?

If the OP knows that the colleague is seriously in debt, then I presume they know them quite well. What's the harm in just asking what the cheque company want to know?! It's not like the OP is going to be giving out any bank details or anything is it. It won't affect their credit at all, which is their main worry. If the cheque company ask any more than "does (s)he work there, for how long, is it full-time" then the OP can just say sorry, I can't help you, and leave it at that.

All I'm saying is that IF the questions are just harmless questions about the colleague's work status, what's the harm in answering them?!

I would do a selection of 80's hits down the phone to them.

'Money's Too Tight to Mention' would be a good starting point.

And then a medley of Johnny Cash numbers.

Ain't nothing going on but the rent....got to have a J O B if you wanne be with me :rotfl:

Like it, Folsom Prison Blues would be a go start for someone deep in debt and trying to get more by dragging their friends into their miserable lives.
