Cheque Centre loan

Hi all,

Just a query - I've had a phonecall today from the cheque centre saying that a colleague has used my name as a reference. What does this mean? They wanted to speak to her (she's on annual leave) or contact her by mobile. I know she's in a lot of debt but I hope this does not link to me somehow or that they start to ask me for money.

Can anyone reassure me please?

Thanks

Just don't give out any of your details they can use (Bank details etc.).

If you don't know anything about it, then the sensible recourse is to tell them you have no idea what they're talking about.
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)
  • It kinda took me by surprise as the call came though on my work's landline (the one on my desk NOT the main office number) and asked to speak to me...not unusual at all. But then he asked me to contact her - I said she probably wouldn't pick up her mobile or emails as they were work contacts and she was on leave.

I hope nothing comes back on me...my boyfriend and I are buying a house so need a mortgage - this would just end all hopes of that.

I will have a word when she gets back...and hope she hasn't used my name elsewhere, I'm seriously annoyed about it.

Obviously I can't deny knowing her if they call again, can I say I don't want to be a reference? Or can I ask what I'm a reference for and what they're ringing me for? Argh I don't like this!!
  • Why didn't you just ask them what the reference was about? If it's a colleague, it may just be that they want confirmation that she works there, full or part time, and how long she's been employed with the firm.

I've read on here about people having to provide about 5 names, addresses and phone numbers as references, I think it was for credit at BrightHouse (the high interest shop for people with wrecked credit).

I believe that is so that they can hassle non-payers through their contacts and so embarrass them into coughing up.

Pretty man trick to play on you. Lets hope she hasn't provided your home address too.

It's a bit rude, but no, you won't get anything against your credit record

If they call again, just say you don't know what they're talking about. Because you don't !

I've never given references for Loans before but I have for Jobs.

Questions go along the lines of:

How long have you known him?
Where did you work together and for how long?
    Would you consider him reliable?
Do you know of any gambling/alcohol habits?
Would you consider him a good friend?

Just generic, other than them confirming I am who they think they are calling (just verbal confirmation, nothing more) an otherwise reasonable pleasant chat.

As above, never give out any personal details espeicially to do with banking.

EDIT: If it is for Brighthouse the very best reference you could give would be to tell them she steals money from old people and sells stolen goods at the local car boot.
  • Will they stop ringing me if I ask them too or am I stuck with these phonecalls?
