I'm afraid I wouldn't normally count something like that as evidence of anything. Given the source and the style, it reads more like propaganda. Some of the references may be interesting, given the time to chase them up, though.

Have a look at http://www.nice.org.uk/media/3FE/1A/BloodAlcoholContentEffectivenessReview.pdf for a more scientific report. It's not very exciting, but the findings on the first few pages give some good info. Is this the sort of info you're looking for?

Well, that's a better presented document. Still just a review, rather than actual evidence, however (a review of studies, which are, in some cases, themselves reviews of other studies!).

If it can be believed, then it suggests there may be some value in changes to the law, including random or checkpoint testing, if it produces a change in the drinking culture...

    1. Yes this is undoubtedly politically driven with the SDLP election on the way.

    2. I'm all for it generally but..

    3. I'm slight worried about the "morning after" situation. I'm sure many of us have had a couple of beers in the evening and the next day is the problem. How do you measure? A "skinful" is a different matter and not what I'm talking about. Just another money earner for the PSNI Tax-collectors as seem to have become.

    4. And one final point. I'd be willing to bet severe money there's a lot more people driving around this country rattling with DRUGS - both prescribed and illegal. Maybe Mr Atwood is throwing stones at the wrong window.

    Whisky Galore (1949)

16% of road deaths are attributed to drink - qnd has been falling year on year
    3% attributed to speed

81% (thats EIGHTY ONE percent) of road deaths are because of driver error where drink or speed wasnt a factor.
Probably people on mobile phones or d**kheads changing lanes at the last minute to try and get a few cars ahead.

Lowering the drink drive limit wont stop the type of guys that go to the pub and have 10 pints and drive home.

zero limit might stop them, eventually like smoking in public places did.Even 16% is 16% too many road deaths. They also need to lok into the drugs and driving too as this seems to get missed.
