Have a look at the IOM (if you can get a work permit).

Low crime, lower unemployment, goodish schools, uni tuition paid.

    Don't forget low tax.

I have a friend on the IoM and about 4-5 years back I compared IoM tax .... over there you could earn 2x as much as here before you paid any tax. Once you started paying tax the tax rate was half what it is here.

As for W*nkleigh ... it's a small village in the middle of nowhere - and if the wages there are high it's because the people start off posher and probably commute a long way for top jobs. Heck, there's not even a chip shop or supermarket to get jobs in.

One thing about places that are "handy for X, Y, Z" tends to be that they're actually nowhere and you have to take a trek out for anything and everything.

Sometimes its nice just to have a bit of peace and quiet. Currently renting a place that is two miles from nearest pub and 3.5 from nearest shop (get your compass out Geneer). Serene and beautiful countryside all around (and Waitrose deliver food packages as required). Mrs Pimp has to drive about 10 miles to work though.

    Winkleigh Devon :rotfl:

Only some idiot who has never lived in the middle of no where would think it was nice.

I wonder where these blessed children will end up having to go to Senior School ?

    Okehampton ? Tiverton ? Bideford ? Barnstaple ?

...wherever it'll be a long school bus commute.

All their mates from school will live miles away, there will be nothing to do in quiet sleepy Winkleigh, there will be no Bus service to get anywhere........all in all just what your average 15 year old would love :T

Erm, that's one single house. Up for auction I believe.

I suggest you look at the next few houses to get an idea of the rough prices there.

40k difference to the first (SSTC) 3 bedroom house.

I'd also suggest you look at the wages available. Full time is approx 18k.

The details say the house is for sale by private treaty (at the bottom just below the council tax)- no auction involved.

My sister's house is for sale at "guide price" - it's not being auctioned either - where she is it means offers near the asking price.
  • Years ago Dumfries in Scotland was voted Best Place to Live in the UK. I grew up there and could not agree at the time. . .

However, it has reasonable house prices, good employment, nice size town, lowish crime, ok shops/facilities and none of the tourist stuff of the Devon/Dorset area.

There are a few blogs saying it is a dump due to only 3 night clubs that are a bit basic, but ut depends what you want! Whne I went to school there the local comps produced students who got firsts in law and even the lower people got really good degrees!

Now with the "we pay for old people care" and "no student fees!" it has proved a good move, just over the border and 3 hrs to manchester. . .
