Scottish Power or EDF?

Hi folks, I've never changed supplier before (although I have switched tariffs with existing supplier) I've done a comparison and there isn't much difference in the saving I would make with a fixed price tariff from either Scottish Power or EDF, I'm just wondering if there is anything else I should take into consideration. Is switching really that straightforward? Do they both have good customer service? Any horror stories about either company that should put me off dealing with them? etc. etc. I've been with Southern Electric for years and found their customer service excellent, it's just that their price increase has now meant a need to shop around
Thanks in advance for any advice.

  • and EDF are similar DD`s randomly changing (or in my case cancelled by EDF without any explanation - 3 months now and they cant explain why they cant take my money....) , phone lines that can literally take an hour on hold to talk to someone , online account access that is hit and miss...

but so far unlike Scottish Power - they arn`t ignoring OFGEM re cancellation charges..... which is a positive ;)

im with EDF for Fixed Saver V2 btw.

Scottish Power are all right if you don't want to speak to anyone, or question anything. I left them 2 months ago, finally got cheques for overpayment, then out of the blue last week got another 'final bill', for a one week of £37. This was for 328 units, whereas normal weekly amount is 38 units, and very sinister this, was based on a 'customer reading' of 391 - pure fiction.

When I rang them, and told them my reading as of now was 268 (2 months after their 'customer reading', I was told they couldn't understand why the account had been rebuilt!!!!

I made sure that my direct debit was cancelled. I don't trust them an inch.

We are Seniors in a small Sheltered Housing bungalow and use only electricity, with Night Storage heating. Have just left SP for EDF. Our SP monthly bill was £90. They wanted to raise it in 2 increments by 10% then 9%. EDF gave me a Capped Plan to September 2012 for £72 monthly.

When we left SP, we had a huge credit of over £200, which they were forced into paying us by cheque.

As stated here, their Customer Support was absolute carp. The last contact I had was a "get you back" call, with a silence after I told the voluble lady of the deal from EDF. Then a promise to call back tomorrow, with " ... a deal to beat that!" No such call was received, but it was irrelevant anyway because we were already with EDF at the time of the first call: something they had not even bothered to check. Says it all, really.

Moral? - Shop around religiously, check MSE advice (we did!) and vote with your metaphorical feet!

Switching online (via a comp site, then using a cashback for the actual switch) will take you around 20 minutes. Very easy, so get on with it if you want to benefit from it on your winter fuel bills-the process will take 4-6 weeks.
