BT broadband very S-L-O-W

My first post after years of being a MSE fan and receiving the weekly email.
We've just moved to Sheffield from the south. Been very unhappy with Talktalk phone & broadband while we were down south, so decided to change to BT. Perhaps a mistake?
Took some weeks to get connected at new address.
Homehub didn't arrive, then two days later two arrived in same post.
So finally phone & broadband connected.
Next day phone & broadband disconnected.
Eventually managed to report this and seemed to be reconnected again last week.
Unexpected visit from Openreach last Wednesday because we & several others locally all had crossed lines so we were actually using someone else's line.
He sorted it out last week.
Now I have VERY slow broadband - checked with BT's own speedchecker and broadbandspeedchecker, speeds in last two days vary from 80 Kbps (yes really), via 368 Kbps to the dizzying heights of 880 Kbps download, upload 849, 819, 812.
Any advice please on what number to phone to get this improved?

  • if the BB is new you have to wait 10 days for the speed to settle, during the 10 days it will be variable. This is normal and you should have been told this.

I'd start with rebooting the router but, as they always say it takes 10 days or so for a new broadband to settle down at its optimum speed, I'd wait until 2 weeks has passed until you start the complaints process in earnest.

Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Thank you both. I'll wait another few days. I have rebooted the router.
