"Take a paper clip and unfold it and stick it in the tiny hole in the front of the cd-rom. That will pop it open. Then you need to check to see if something is jammed on the rails, or whatnot."

If it's physically stuck shut with a jammed disc then push a small paperclip through the small hole in the front of the drive - this should release the tray allowing you to open itNeil0

if it's just happened turn the laptop off and press the open button as it boots (before it gets to the windows screen)Ex forum ambassador

Opening a CD or DVD drive to retrieve a disc
- Use Windows to open the drive door:
- Double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop (or click Start and My Computer in Microsoft Windows XP).
- Right-click the CD, CD-RW, or DVD drive, and then click Eject.

If the door still will not open, do the following:
- Close all programs and shut down the computer.
- Unplug the PC from the power outlet and remove the battery.
- Locate the manual release hole in the front faceplate of the optical drive tray This is a small hole under the door that is a little bigger than the diameter of a paper clip. The location of the manual eject hole will vary.
- Insert a straightened paperclip into the manual release hole until resistance is felt.
- Once the resistance is felt, keep pushing the paper clip until the drawer comes out about a quarter of an inch.
- Remove the paper clip and gently pull out the drawer until the disc is accessible.
- Remove the CD and turn on the computer.

Thanks all, I've managed to open the drive, but when I insert a cd the pc doesn't regconise the drive. It won't play and won't eject.

IIRC the T42 has a removable CDROM which is exchangeable for a DVD or Floppy.
In Device Manager, delete the CDROM. Take the CDROM out and reboot. Shut down, reinsert the CDROM and reboot.
If the CDROM is OK the machine will find it and freshly load the drivers.0 -
There is nothing showing the cdrom in device manager.
I have taken out the cdrom.
Do I replace it before rebooting ???

I'd reboot once without it and again with it.0

John, I've rebooted but it does not regconise a cd.
In device manager it shows in disc drives one device, is this the one I remove ??? If so how ??
