Hello everybody, son has just spent £40 on adobe premiere elements 9 and photoshop 9. We have recorded video on three different sources (including a still camera) and it is an avi file format. The program will not let us move the still camera avi to the timeline quoting "this type of file is not supported - or the required codec is not installed", my camcorder avi clips fare slightly better as in I can hear the audio but it is just a blue screen and no video. Have tried converting the files with mpegstreamclip to dv, and also tried renaming the files and converting them to various but to no avail. I am frustrated as our recording equipment is not old (not top of the range). I'd be happy to go through a "conversion process" if needs e, but adobe does not seem to accept anything I've tried. Please, can someone help. Thank you so much, sal xx

You could start with the codec pack mentioned here
http://forums.adobe.com/thread/418113
Link for codec pack
http://filehippo.com/download_klite_codec_pack/
If that does not help, then you could use this to determine which codecs are needed

Santer thank you, installing the k codec pack appears to have worked for half the videos so a massive improvement (the ones from a still phone) The other half go across to the timeline with no issue and no error message (apart from asking if I want to clear up quality problems) but then just have a blueish screen and I can hear audio, suspect this is a slightly different problem. I am halfway there, so thank you ! sal x0

If you used the file hippo link then you have the full codec pack, there is a mega pack which you can try here
http://www.codecguide.com/download_k-lite_codec_pack_mega.htm
If you still need codecs, then use this to see which they are

Also try ffdshow (free) which installs a lot of DirectX filters so Windows can recognise the files on behalf of the application0
