  • We don't bother with non-bios. We use Daz. It's quite often on offer, one of the huge boxes for £4 is quite often in Tesco, we tend to buy a bootload to last us a few months until the next time they run it. I found it washes much better than non-bio and is less irritating to the skin that non-bio. We have a baby plus DH has a few skin conditions that were worse when using Fairy or Persil, but have all gone down completely since using Daz. I found that all of us itched like crazy with non-bios especially Persil.

My experience is the polar opposite. I switched to Persil Original because of skin irritation caused by Biological detergents.

Yeah, I must say I'm so glad I switched to Persil non bio as well. Was using supermarkets own for sometime, noticed the powder wasn't rinsing off my clothes properly after a wash and had to run a rinse a second time quite frequently.

I tend to use the non-bio liquid/gel. I found recently that the Asda own brand was gunking up my machine. Clothes ended up with grey slime on them which actually stained lighter clothes.

Surcare liquid is only £2 in Asda (it was on Saturday anyway).
Nevermind the dog, beware of the kids!

Unfortunately, liquid/gel is famous for leaving a bad smell in the machines drum.

your modern washing machine can clean lightly soiled clothes by just pushing them around in water

This reminds me of the time I used to live in staff accommodation some time ago. One of the members of staff never put washing detergent into the staff quarters washing machine, when you wanted to use the machine and removed his clothes after waiting for the load to finish it smelt to high heaven due to him never using the stuff. He had a bit of a reputation for doing this.

I guess though, as the author of the above article has pointed out, it does depend on how soiled the said items are.
Or you can make your own detergent

That's the laundry gloop I mentioned in post #5.
53% of people don't use the recommended amount of detergent per washload

I use a fraction of the recommended amount, approximately 50g in each compartment, even if the wash requires you to use one compartment. Comes out a treat no matter how soiled the items are. Even when I use Ariel for washing towels, linen, uniform and other so called non coloureds it appears to be the same result.
