Short term UK car rental

I've sold my car as I hardly used it, but am going away in a few weeks and ned a car for the weekend, probably Friday night till Sunday night. Anyone got any tips on the best (cheapest) way to do this?

Sunday night is a tricky time for car hire places, as they tend to be closed. If you live near an airport there's the option of hiring a car there, as they are often open much longer hours than the town/city branches. Some companies will let you drop the car off while the branch is closed, but not all of them allow this.

Alternatively, many companies offer weekend packages running from Friday to Monday - Enterprise for example has discounted weekend hire at some branches (google Enterprise Weekend Special). It's also worth looking through the phone book for local independent places, as these may be cheaper.
