When my vet mentioned glucosamine, he said I could get it from anywhere. No mention of them not being able to absorb the human stuff. However he also said he'd seen little scientific evidence that it made much difference either way, it was more anecdotal which doesn't really prove anything.
I wouldn't necessarily assume she was feeding you a line though - some vets (same as doctors, and the general public) are more inclined to look at alternative therapies. I'm just lucky I've got a vet who tells me the scientific evidence for these that he is aware of then lets me decide whether to go with it or not.
The short walks thing should make a difference as well. Mutt seizes up when she's been lying down for too long, or done too much exercise. It took me a while to find the balance and I still get it wrong sometimes. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -

The bill at the vets today came to £168...that was for the consultation (10 mins), 7 days of painkillers and 120 Glucosamine tablets .
Thanks again xx
Hi, just to say that I have seen a specialist in HD, i.e. someone who has trained as a consultant for years and years and years - he was great. But he suggested that there is little evidence either way to back up the effects of glucosamine, however it was worth a shot. I checked whether I needed to continue buying the extortionately priced tablets from my vets and he said no, the human kind is perfectly fine. I now buy my lot tables from sainsburys on the buy 2 get 3rd free. It works out about £9 for 90 tablets. I do give them some vit C though which helps their bodies break down the glucosamine.
The vets are like the drs really and just selling whatever product is in their own interest....
Hope that helps!
