a lot of hosts that offer free hosting are overselling their servers and also offering free hosting will also attract spammers etc, so you would not know what or who are on the server.

some host do offer reduced plans for charities/community groups as long as you can prove your that you are a charity/community group as you will be surprised on how many who say they are when they are not.

easyasabc-hosting.com use to run a site specifically for charities/community groups so you can try them
  • thanks we are happy to pay the full amount, but at the moment we just want some free web hosting for a website to test. it doesnt have to be able to accommodate our final domain, just free space. In the old days themutual and bluecarrots had some freespace...any suggestions these days?

If it HAS to be free then use www.000webhost.com. It's easy to move nameservers when you become a bit more established.

Make sure that your domain is purchased separately.

Don't really understand the need to upload everything to a free site then move it over to a paid for site at a later date. This just involves unwanted downtime (circa 24 - 48 hours) whilst the DNS is changed over.

best thing is look for a host that will give you a free trial and then you just ask them to upgrade this or just cancel at end of trial, this way no DNS or downtime issues.
