I hope you still have the option of redundancy at the end of the 4 week trial if things don't work out for you or them.

I was in a very similar situation to you, made redundant at the end of September, the only thing they asked is do I have savings in excess of £16k. As I do (thanks to the redundancy payment) I will only get job seekers for 6 months, then I have to live off savings.

There does seem to be the odd job out there in the salary and field I am looking for so, fingers crossed, I should have something suitable soon and won't need to touch my savings unless I want to.

  • I completed my work trail and was redeployed officially Dec 1st.

Now started a DMP with Payplan to address my debt, shame about the redundancy pay off, but at least I'm keeping a job and a roof over my head.

Thanks to all the commentors for their support.

It's nice to know what happened. It may not be your dream job, but you are right - it's a job and right now that is a pretty good option. Worst case scenario is that you have kept your redundancy pay for another day! Best case is that it's pushed you in to sorting things out and after some hard slog you'll be a lot better off in just about every way. Lets hope that 2012 sees better days

Just remember, every day in the new deployment is one day closer to another year and a bigger redundancy payout.
As for the fear of the new job making you ill with stress, do what I do. When things start getting to you, just go to the loo or go get a glass of water or something.

Good luck with your new role.

But and i keep saying this - do not pay off debts without very giood advice to do so. Some benefits treat this as disposing of assets and refuse you benefits. It's too late after you have paid off debts to discover that you can't claim benefit if you need to because they treat you as still having the money! Do not rush in to disposing of money you may need.

So long as you document it there is no problem IME.

I've done this during a prior period of unemployment where I inherited money and I took all the paperwork down to the Job Centre and explained what I inherited, what I paid off and what I had left.

I think there was a grand total of a couple of quid deducted from my benefit at the time due to the money that I had left, but I didn't have a problem with it.

Check with the Job Centre, but be sure and document EVERYTHING.
