Sky+ - cannot play recorded programmes.

I've phoned Sky but the engineer cannot get to me till next Tuesday!!
In a long and ongoing war with Sky - yet another Sky+ box appears to have developed a fault. I've had this one 2 months - it's a refurbished Thomson.
I can sometimes switch it on!
When it's on ican navigate the programme plannerand it will also record. But it refuses to play back.
Is there anything I can try that will not result in losing all the recordings?
If not - I'll leave it so the engineer can see it as it is.

This query intrigues me too. I have had Sky+ since last March and ( touch wood ) it has been fine. But last night I recorded Big Brother, and when I went to play it back, it freezes after 3 minutes. It states there is over 60 minutes recorded but nothing plays.0
