Help with trip to Glasgow please!

Thanks to the cheapo Travelodge deals we have a long week-end booked for this coming week-end. We are spending 2 nights in the Cumbernauld T/L and one night in the Glasgow Central T/L. Would appreciate any help/advice with what to do, where to go, places to eat etc. Have already looked for places to eat in Cumbernauld ..... any opinions on Mings and Puccini?? Would it be better to go into Glasgow? Any recommendations on Glasgow eateries? We would like to have one 'posh' meal!

The main purpose of our visit is to go to the Burrell Collection, otherwise we like a bit of walking/pottering/shopping/the odd museum and gallery visit etc. We are 2 adults, with car travelling from the south.

Many thanks, in advance, for any helpful suggestions. :)

No idea about Cumbernauld, despite it being 20 minutes down the road from my previous haunts. Glasgow, La Vita, is a gorgeous Italians I've never heard anyone having a bad meal there. I would advise booking though if it's a weekend. It faces into George Square too, website here http://www.lavitapizzeria.co.uk/index.php?page=glas_home

http://www.paperinos.co.uk/ is another very good restaurant as is http://www.blackhouse.uk.com/restaurants/restaurants-glasgow

Have a fab time, the shops are really good :)

  • Parking near the Glasgow Central Travelodge is quite expensive on the street. Cambridge Street NCP is probably your best bet for no fuss overnight parking. Or the streets around Port Dundas are free after 6pm but start up again at 8am.

I was at the Burrell Collection last Sunday and it's getting some building repairs done so not everything is available to view.
  • Not sure re Cumbernauld however there are lots of nice restaurants around your Glasgow travellodge.

There is the Glasgow Merchant City a shirt walk away. This is an area of Glasgow which is filled with nice eateries (Kubla Khan, Italian Kitchen and Jamies Italian are my favourites) and lots of them, apart from Jamies, do fairly decent pre theatres. Glasgow is famous for its indian food so if you like that sort of thing then there is a good selection of indian resturants there. My fave is the Cafe India. I would recommed a trip into the west end which has even more nice restuarants and pubs which would be easily accessible by subway if you wanted to leave the car.

For your posh meal the Rogano is a nice, famous fish resturant apparently frequented by Rod Stewart before an old firm football game. There is also the Ubiquitous Chip in the West End and Hotel Du Vin, again in the West End, if you want to splash the cash. All the bigger resturants have websites so if you are a picky eater (like me:)) then have a look.

Hope you have a great trip and enjoy Glasgow! Its a fantastic city

  • Hi. I've stayed in both. The Cumbernauld one has a pub next door (The Red Deer - or something like that). Haven't eaten there, but it seems popular - car park is busy at the weekends. TL put a menu in the rooms of the hotel, so that might be worth a look, especially if you arrive late. Mings is also next door (the other side) - never been there either - we wondered if it had closed down it looked a bit deserted! We usually eat in Glasgow itself. We've had good meals in Mother India (you can take your own wine - just pay corkage) , the Mussel Inn and a Pizzeria/pasta place called SoHo (I think). We went for a special meal (posh) at a place called 'Two Fat Ladies at the Buttery'. That was excellent, but difficult to find. There are a couple of Whetherspoons if you're watching the pennies - cheap burgers, steaks etc.

You must try to visit the Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery in Glasgow - that is packed with interesting items. And the West End is nice just to wander around - also Botanical Gardens are nearby.

Basically there are loads of lovely eateries and it's a fabulous city to visit. Have fun.
Weight loss - here we go again - watch this space!

Would agree with SoHo in Miller Street, very good food and even better cocktails.

Wouldn't agree with Jamie's Italians, I've been twice, had to wait on both occasions as was told I couldn't book, and the food has been nothing special and over priced in my opinion.

  • My daughter took me to Browns (beside Merchant City and George Square) for my birthday last week and the food and service were fabulous. Would really recommend for a special treat
