Advice please?

Hi All,

Been following the wonderful work on these forums for a while, and it has made me realise how utterly silly I was to be embarassed into taking PPI on debts for fear of not getting the debt I was asking for. This was especially the case in the several loans/credit cards I was offered at my account reviews over the years.

Could someone advise if they think it's worth me pursuing a PPI claim? I've always worked in the public sector, with the excellent sick pay arrangements provided by them, I now realise that PPI was unnecessary for me, but I don't recall that being said to me. Would this be a case for a claim?

In another case I've had a Barclaycard for 23 years, obtained when I was 18. It sickens me now to think how much money I've wasted in useless cover.

I've cancelled it on all my cards now, so at least they won't get another penny out of me in that way, just am unsure if it is worth claiming on what I was stupid enough to sign up to for so long.

Many thanks.

There is nothing wrong with having PPI. So, having it is not a mis-sale reason. So, what would be your reasons for mis-sale if you were to complain?

Most public sector roles do not have excellent sick pay. Some do, some don't. What is yours?

  • Thanks for reply, as you can see I'm unclear as to whether I was mis-sold, but feel it *might* be the case given my working benefits. In the case of the account reviews in the bank, I don't feel any time was spent on seeing if I actually needed cover.

In answer to your query, I have six months full pay, the six months at half pay as part of my contract. Have done for over 20 years. My pension also covers me for 2 times my salary if I die while in the job.

That makes it worth a complaint.

That bit doesnt unless you are single with no financial dependents. Death in service is there to make up for lost pension benefits for the beneficiary.

    Good luck on your reclaiming.

Details with the reclaim questionnaire below - step 3, complete and send to their complaints dept or head office (of whoever sold and set up your loan). Remember to keep copies for future reference as well.

  • Thanks again for your help, dunstonh, much appreciated.

In terms of the second point, I am single with no financial dependents. Just checked and it's 2 and a half times my salary my pension covers me for, which amounts to around 100k.

Thanks Di, will download and complete. Nothing to lose but some stamps, paper and printer ink.

That sounds like it was anything up to three years after you took out the card that you became eligible for those benefits. That would mean the original purchase was suitable.

Also, why did you take the cover? Clearly you didn't apply online that long ago so the argument that it was preticked on the screen won't apply.

I cited the Barclaycard example as an example of my naivete, but basically took that because I was young and didn't know any better. I actually got the Barclaycard a year after getting the first public sector job I had, so was eligible at the time for the sickness protection.

The two instances that concern me most though are LTSB loans (2) and a credit card from them sold to me as part of my account review. This was in 2002-2004 in their branch. I recall now being rather annoyed that on clearing the loans early I got no refund on the upfront PPI premiums for the loans. I wish then I'd done soemthing about it, as I did felt ripped off.
