In theory yes, it would work, but the practicality of it is not so good. Typical solar PV is just not able to generate electricity in large enough or cheap enough quantities to make it worth using for heating. Also, using it to replace gas use means you'd be realising little value from it (gas is cheap, much cheaper than electricity). A much more reasonable option is to export electricity to the grid and sell it to your electricity company.0
