Call from Barclays asking me for security information

Options
I received a telephone call from Barclays on Friday. This was in response to me sending them an email relating to my lack of pre-approved offers.

Anyway..they asked me for the first and last digit of my mothers maiden name and the 7th digit of my password, plus my date of birth. I gave them this all quite happily. The caller then informed me to go into a branch of the bank to update my employer details as this was probably why there were no new offers, he said that they are updated the first monday of each month and this would probably trigger off some offers.

I didnt think anymore of this, thanked him and said I would pop in the next day.

The next day I couldnt find my debit card anywhere so called up to report it missing, They went through security checks with me, the first one being asking me the name of my employer, which I gave him...and he said I had passed security. I then said, but apparently you havent got the details of my current employer as I was called and told to give this information at the branch.

This is when I became worried, as the barclays employee then said, "We never call you and ask for details over the phone,".......Now I am really worried. I will pop into the branch when my new card arrives to see if it was a bogus caller.

Sorry for such a long message, what I really want is reassurance that on occassion Barclays will call up to discuss an online query and that I havent been duped.

Thanking you all in advance

  • It was most likely genuine, as they did not ask for all your security details only part of it. My only concern though is as you say the debit card going missing. Did they confirm when the last payment left your account, and for how much?

Personally anyone calling claiming to be the bank, I would refuse to answer any questions ask for their name and what department they work in or extension number. Then call the bank back on the number you have for them asking to be put though.

If the call is genuine then they should not mind you doing that, as you rightly say they could be anyone.
  • I agree a fraudster would want all of your password and mothers maiden name etc.

They could have updated the system after the call - why they wanted you to call at a branch is anybody's business.

    Thanks for your replies.

I will check my account for any irregular transactions when my new card arrives. I need it to check my online account as I have to put it in a card reader before it allows access.

It just seemed odd that the first caller from Barclays said they hadn't got details of my current employer, yet it was obviously on file as it was confirmed by another Barclays advisor as being correct when I reported my card missing.

Anyway...once my new card arrives, I will check out with the bank whether this caller was genuine or not. It was probably a coincidence my card went missing. (I noticed a hole in the lining of my handbag!)

    thanks again everyone
