Lloyds TSB under 19s

Options
Hi,
I just opened an under 19s account. I'm currently 16. I was wondering does the Visa debit card work on planes and on trains etc? My last card never seemed to work in places like that.

  • Yes it will work wherever they accept visa.

If you go abroad though, you have to let them know because sometimes the banks block these transactions to protect you from fraud :-)

I think he may be referring to if its a online card or offline card.

    No one really knows.

I'm not sure how you'd really be able to tell.
  • What's the difference between a offline card and a online card. Is one better than the other?

All I know is my card has never been refused on a train, though it would be cheaper to buy tickets online before travelling. So I'd imagine the same would be true for planes too, never used a debit card on a plane to be honest.

An Online card needs authorisation from the bank after each transaction. (Certain machines, Planes and trains have trouble with this)

The card gets declined if it can not

If the card is an offline card then it will work everywhere without authorisation up to a set floor limit (Normally £99)
  • Doesn't an offline card have embossed digits? So they can take an imprint if you're in the air and put the charge through when they touch down?
  • Well, I guess it's offline then because when I go to the petrol station at Asda, it says maximum spend £99 after I put my card and pin number in.

It does seem to pre-authorise £1 as when I check online my available balance for a few days is £1 less than it is, with no petrol purchase showing. Eventually the full amount comes out online and it shows up on my statement and the pounds availablilty comes back on the account.

And lloyds tsb do issue embossed cards.
