OWL electric monitor
Hi there, i live in a 3 bed semi with my wife, the only gas i use is on the hob, everything else is electric including the storage heaters. The electricity board have told me i need to pay nearly £200 per month to cover what i use.
I found out a few days ago i have had the immersion running 24/7 and the OWL says it was using 2.45 KW? Now i have the water heated for an hour a day when we get in from work and all our stanby lights are now turned off.
Now im trying to understand the OWL display, at the moment it says im using 0.33 energy and sinse i plugged it in yesterday i have used 6.1.
On the cost it says 2.36 pence and 60.07 pence in total, surely i have used more than 60 pence of electric in 24 hours? I think my rate is 7 pence per unit which i have set the OWL to.
Also for this type of house with all electric what would the best tarrif be for me when the house is empty in the day. Heating is not put on untill very cold as i have a gas fire in the lounge if we need it.

If you have storage heaters the only tariff type you should consider is an E7 (dual rate) one (which is probably what you are on already). You should time your hot water to come on overnight when the rate is cheaper and 7p/kWh sounds way too low for a daytime unit rate, regardless of what rate you are on (single or dual).0

These b****y things should be banned ............. they just cause confusion..............
Everyone has a device which accurately measures their energy consumption - it is called a meter !0 -
There have been no electricity boards since privatisation.
I seriously doubt you are paying as little as 7 pence /unit for electricity.
Check your last bill and divide the price you paid by the number of units used, you'll probably find its about 15 pence/unit.
An immersion heater is usually around 3Kw, run for an hour will take 3 units, cost around 45pence.
Read your meter once a week and work out your usage that way. Its simple and accurate. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
Tell us where you can get electric for 7p per kw and I will go there. its more like 12p with all the increases recently and some pay more than that
Forget the owl and read your meter, if you are now having to Pay £200 a month you are using a lot of energy and or paying for a debt0 -
yes i did make a !!!! up on the price;
Day energy 14.96
Night energy 6.39
Stored heat energy 5.10
Obviously with me leaving the immersion on 24/7 has been what has upped the bill. I can read the meter but that doesnt show sudden surges in whats being used, this device has shown me what was using the energy and where it can be saved.
Im a huge hifi and home entertainment buff and all the kit left on standby was using a fair bit. Now i have adjusted my usage i can see my bill being below £100 pm.0 -
I have an electricity monitor from Eon and it is certainly informative. It might not be 100% accurate but it sure beats going outside in the rain to read your meter every 5 minutes to see what is using all your electricity.
And it tells me if I have forgotton to turn the heater off in my shed.0
