From what yhou say it would appear they might not be kosher and arcon5 has offered good advice. If I were you I would try an get Trading Standards to have a look on your behalf even if just from a new set of eyes perspective.

    Is it nepalbid?

If you go to small claims court, before you do so make sure you do a search on the company to see how many CCjs there is already against them.

Following this, I would ask whether it is worth it... it will cost about £80-£90 in total to get the judgement so know point throwing good money after bad if there is a chance you won't see it again.

I'm not going to name the company on here (but it isn't nepalbid).

Yeah I realise the cost involved with a claim against them, but I'm prepared to throw good money after bad if it'll help stop them doing it to someone else. I'd rather waste a few hundred pound and sleep with a clear conscience.

Very often a well presented and researched POC on an N1 is enough to put the wind up a dodgy company or at the very least cause them to seek expensive legal advise :)

Can I ask a dumb question? - How do I find out if a company has outstanding CCJ's against it - I've never done that before.

There's quite a few companies that will do it, a quick google search will help.

The thing is, a CCJ won't necessarily stop them or mean they have to engage in expensive legal advice. They would simply shut the company down and restart, pheonixing the assets, domains, websites ect to a new company.

Thanks for your reply - all of the replies on here have been really helpful, thanks to everyone.

I'll make an appointment to present the information I've gathered to my local Trading Standards office and take it from there I think.

Thanks for your patience with a 'ranting' newbie :D
