Before i go ahead and update my orchid dialler 'rules' , i thought i would just check that ive got things right.
I used to use '18185' for 0845 Evening calls(5p connection fee the 0.5p per min)
Noticed that BT is 1p per min.
So a call to an 0845 evening number Call with 18185 needs to be over 10 mins to save money over BT.
Also 0870 numbers (evening and weekend) are cheaper with BT than 18185
Have i got this right ?
thanks

It's no longer 'either/or' for most such calls - the difference in connection (or 'set-up') charges means you have to know before you start the call if it'll be short or not!
http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.html?p=2857316&postcount=3Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -

Thanks for the link Heinz, very helpful.
I will go with:
BT for 0845 weekdays
18185 for 0845 evenings (difference in cost made up after 4 mins)
BT for 0845 weekends as its cheaper
0870 BT evenings and weekends and 18185 for Weekday 0870 calls.
does this sound like the cheapest option for all length of calls ?

However, although I wrote that link and try to keep it up-to-date, I have to say I will have to refer to it every time I make such calls in future!
Thankfully, I rarely fail to find a geographical or 0800 alternative on SayBoTo0870 so it'll only be occasionally!Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Thanks Heinz, have altered my dialling 'rules' to the following:

Landline to mobile DAYTIME 18185
Landline to mobile EVENING 18185
0844/0871 BT at all times (1280 to bypass CPS).
0845 Peak. (dialaround) (1280 to bypass cps) 0844 462 34 34
0845 Evening 18185
0845 Weekend BT (1280 to bypass cps)
0870 Daytime (discountdial) (1280 to bypass cps) 0844 566 35 66

...only just a note to factor in the BT Privacy issues. To keep free caller display you need some calls on BT, so if the saving by using an altnet is small (e.g. using 18185 for 0845 in the evening if it turns out your calls are of average 5mins) it can be worthwhile taking the hit on the individual number range for the greater good of keeping your whole costs down. Depends whether you're keeping BT happy with e.g. your evening 0870 calls.I really must stop loafing and get back to work...0
