An excellent idea..... apart from that he is 7years old and would like to try something that his peers all talk about. He loves reading... is doing well for his age and we read together every night at bedtime. We recently donated 8 bags of childrens books that he has grown out of to a charity shop. He still has a bookcase full in his room. He listens to stories on cassette tape and cd often and is able to answer comprehension questions excellently when asked.
He has NEVER had the "latest" console and wouldnt expect it. His cousins have all had Wii's, DS's and now have the latest PS3's and whatever else is out there. He has, up until recently been more than happy to just play on my hubby's old PS2 and can take it or leave it.
But... he is 7years old. And whilst i agree with what i assume you are implying - that children should not spend all their time on technology alone - i also believe that children who are not up to speed on technology these days will unfortunately be behind their peers - educationally and socially. So he will be getting a DSi for his birthday. He is 7 - I work with children and families and last week i went out to visit a family whose 2 year old sits playing on a xbox. That, i dont agree with. At 7 years old i let him have some independence and control - he certainly wont have control over how long he spends on it. It will be limited to a certain amount of time per day - dependent on his behaviour and work at school etc.
Hope all this answers your snide question
Baldrick, does it have to be this way? Our valued friendship ending with me cutting you up into strips and telling the prince that you walked over a very sharp cattle grid in an extremely heavy hat?0 -

It is entirely possible to own a DS AND read books you know!My son has had a DS since he was 5 and been a free fluent reader since he was in year 2 so 6 years old. It's a question of balance and there's nothing wrong with a 7 year old having a games console :cool:Slightly mad mummy to four kidlets aged 4 months,6,7 and 8

I wondered how long it would be before the parental police stepped in. Get a grip dear, you know nothing about OP, OP's child or the lifestyle they lead.
Perhaps you should also buy yourself a book....I can pass on a few suggestions:

My son is 6 and loves Fifa, but he is football mad anyway. Sadly Liverpool despite my efforts for him to be Evertonian! He also likes Super Mario Kart and other Mario type games.

We also bought our son a Ds for his 7th birthday. His favourites are Fifa, Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games and Zoo Tycoon. He also likes Harry Potter and the Lego ones. He's asked for Mario Kart and Cars 2 for ChristmasThank you to everyone for sharing competitions!0
