HELP! - red wine stain on waxed pine table

Having recently spent £220 on a very nice solid pine table, I was most upset when some red wine got spilled on it. Unfortunately it didn't get noticed at the time and soaked in a bit. Seems the wax finish does nothing to protect it.
I tried to get it out by rubbing with a damp cloth. It came out a bit, but also took the wax off it. As the wax gave it a coloured finish, I now have a couple of very light patches on the table, and it looks completely ridiculous.

Can anyone advise the best way of touching it up so it looks good again, or should I strip the wax and varnish it.
If I'm going to strip it, what's the best way?
If I decide on that, I'm only going to do the top as it's too fiddly to do the whole thing, and would apply a few coats of a matt varnish just to protect it. Any suggestions to get a good colour match?

Before you do anything drastic, I would buy some very fine grade wire wool ... something like grade 0000 from memory. And some wax .. it used to be Briwax, but I think there are other alternatives. They usually come in a range of different colours - you probably want something like Antique Pine.

Then take the wire wool, dip it in the wax and gently rub the affected area. Once the wax is dry, buff it up.

You'll need to find a good traditional ironmongers for the wire wool & wax, though I have seen it in larger branches of Homebase & B&Q.

The wax is destroyed by alcohol - in fact, you would use an alcohol based stripper if you wanted to remove it entirely. But that sounds a bit drastic for only a small blemish.

However, you do need to rewax it from time to time .. so when you get the wax, it won't just be needed for the repair!
