Hiya

Just starting out on the road to OS nirvana - so apologies for being a bit clueless about these things....

Just been into Sainbury's and timed it right as they were having a reducing frenzy, can I freeze:-

Runner beans (fresh)
Carrots/broccolli (pre-chopped)
A treacle tart??????

Please help or i'll have to eat it all tonight/tomorrow!!!!

Cheers,

Sarah

The tart should be fine, but may not be quite so crisp when thawed unless you warm it in the oven.

Vegetables should be blanched (put in boiling water for about a minute and then cooled quickly before packing and freezing) but if you are planning to eat them within about a week or so they will probably be OK without.

Brilliant, you're a star. Am trying to get the hang of the OS'ing but need a bit of handholding....

Although my total shop came to 4.91 (20 items), I was pretty proud of that:j

:T :T Well done on your bargains :D:D

As you are dipping your toes into the reduced counter treasure box and are unsure what will or won't freeze, you might like to have a look at the following websites so that you can make the most of the bargains you come across when it comes to freezing :D

Food Freezing Guide (pdf) - a US document, but very useful in explaining what will and won't freeze, keeping a freezer inventory, how to wrap foods etc. Well worth reading, in fact, it's worth printing off for reference.

    Freezing Advice from Delia

Freezing Food - another US website, but very informative and worth reading/bookmarking

Hope that helps and wishing you many more bargains :D:D:D

Our Government pages - Food Standards Agency - states:-
Can pasteurised milk be frozen for a few weeks before use in the home?

It should be safe to freeze milk, providing you do the following things:
    • freeze it before the 'Use by' date
    • follow any freezing or thawing instructions on the label
    • defrost it in the fridge so that it doesn't get too warm – allow about 24 hours for it to thaw
    • try to use the milk within a few days of defrosting – it will go off in the same way as ordinary pasteurised milk
When milk is frozen it expands and this can rupture the packaging. Check that the packaging is intact before you defrost it. If it has ruptured it's better not to use the milk.

Remember, freezing might affect the quality of the milk.

Maybe Delia hasn't found/read that link yet?;):D :shhh:

Here are some older threads about freezing sandwiches and rolls which came up when I did a search for "freezing sandwiches" in OS (there are some others, but I've included the search results link if you want to view those) :-
