But just for the record. I didn't say that I only use the computer for browsing. I said that the browser uses a lot of memory and that I am getting close to using all 4 GB.

Change your browser for one that isn't a memory hog and has a known memory leak bug. I have never ever in my entire 20 years online had a browser use anywhere approaching even half that. In fact I'd be shocked at 1GB and I usually have several tabs open over a couple of browser instances using dual monitors.

Far cheaper than spending money on RAM you don't need.

100 tabs open? - even so, a 4GB system should have plenty free or in use as cache - what's the commit charge when all this stuff is running - if you set the firefox setting suggested to true, the commit should drop every time you minimise firefox.

Looking at the Speccy results it shows:

    RAM 4.00 GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 531MHz (7-7-7-20)
    DRAM Frequency 531.8 MHz
    CAS# Latency (CL) 7 clocks

Suggests your current ram is DDR3-1066 / PC3 8500 (Don't confuse with what we're looking at on Crucials site which is DDR3-1333 / PC3 10600)!

It would appear that the " 8GB Kit (4GBx2), 240-pin DIMM, DDR3 PC3-10600 memory module" Part no: CT2316145 should be fine as far as I can see, anyone else want to comment on this?

It's quite bewildering, Crucial will often show several options and usually all will work fine, in this case your ram appears slightly slower than the two options Crucial now offer (as ram gets faster they stop selling the slightly slower versions as the faster ones are backwards compatible)

    DDR3 info on Wiki here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DDR3_SDRAM (look at the JDEC table for speed and model numbering)

If the PC can take it, you can afford it and might use it all, I'd say go for the ram as it's cheap as chips! :D

Thanks very much for this. Really useful. So one vote at least on the slightly higher voltage memory, but still the cheapest of the cheap. Do you think I want to put this in with the 2 strips of 1gb ie total 10 or better to have total 8 (given that I already have the two strips).

    Greatly appreciated advice.

  • Yeah you should be able to add the 2 x 4GB modules after removing 2 of the 1GB modules giving you 10GB in total.....

DDR3 is really quite cheap at the moment.
