Not all quinces are huge; ones we have at work that are ready at the moment are Victoria plum sized rather than grapefruit sized. If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0 -
I noticed a tree outside our house that always full of fruit that look like apples but this year i took a closer look and the fruits are an oval shape and a yellowy colour.
How can you tell if the fruits are edible??0 -

Go and sniff one and if they are fragrant then they are probably quinces....If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0 -
sorry butting in...
we have a tree in back garden produces apple looking fruits. Asked neighbour who said they were janopica!?!
Anyone know if this is edible?
Has lots of spikes on branches and is low growing so not great.Trying to earn some pennies from crafting again this year!0 -
Yellow, apple-like fruits, that smell fragrant. Called Japonica. QUINCES!!!
And yes, they are edible - however are very tart so have a look at some recipes for quince jelly or wine.If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0 -
Not sure.
They look slightly too big but it is hard to tell the size from the photo.
My crab apple tree produces 50p sized apples and a deep red skin when they are ripe. They are green on the sides that the sun doesn't touch though. When I make jelly from them, the jelly is a pink colour.
Here are an example of the fruits on the tree. Sorry about the really big picture

However, if they're a decent size you can use them for cooking instead of cooking apples anyway, and they make really great jelly. You can even get crab apples that are deep red colour and look like big cherries, and they're the same colour all the way through!
One of those red crab trees near us-makes fab pink jelly which then can be used as a great natural pink food colouring as well as the other used.

The leaves look just like apple to me and they look just like the basket of apples I have in the garage waiting to be turned into crab apple jelly. There are many types of crab and wild apples some are all green some red some pink or mixed-just like commercial apples.
We also have a lot of "john dowie" crab apples which don't look much like apples at all.
