Admiral car insurance cancelled my policy!

Hi all,

I'm new to this site so please stick with me! I'm having a nightmare and like most people money is rather tight!

I renew my car insurance with admiral last month as they offered me the best deal again! Somehow or another they ended up with the direct debit coming out of a different account than I thought it was setup on so I missed the first payment!

I had a letter from them saying they would try and take it again a week later so I paid some more money in my bank account - still not realising it was the wrong one!

Again they tried and failed to take it and sent me another letter saying the policy was being cancelled... I called them and said I would make the payment then and there and we checked details tonfind out about the bank account error! They said it was to late the only way they would continue with me as a customer is if I paid the whole year upfront which was over £600!! I explained to them that even if I wanted to I couldn't and didn't have the money to afford to pay!

So they said sorry they had to cancel it and that was the end of that or so I thought... Two weeks later again I received a letter demanding a cancellation payment of £128.80, in the mean time I've had to pay another company for my insurance Inc a month upfront so I can't afford to pay admiral a cancellation fee for them cancelling my policy which i wanted to keep!

I now have a debt collectors letter and an additional £20 charge on top chasing me!

Any advice would be much appreciated - I kno I should have checked the bank account info etc but anninnocent mistake is easy to make!

Regards,
Fryertucker

You need to try and come to some arrangement to pay this off (maybe by instalments), as now they have passed it on to a debt collector they will pursue you all the way to get the money you owe (including court/ccj/etc).

Also make sure your new insurer is aware you had the Admiral policy cancelled, and the reason for it.
  • So I don't have a choice but to pay it? Just doesn't seem fair to demand full years payment on the spot, or to charge me so much when they wanted to cancel the policy not me?

    Kind regards,

They'll have asked for the full year's premium because, in their eyes, you have defaulted on a credit agreement. Because of that, the offer of credit has been withdrawn - something that is very common when a borrower does default on unsecured credit.

And as above; if you haven't already, you need to tell your new insurer that you have had insurance cancelled in the past.

Well I've heard of them charging you if you (the customer) cancels the policy, but Ive never heard of them charging a cancellation fee if the company cancels it, surely that cant be right.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • The payment is likely to be a premium for the time you were covered whilst they chased you for the money.

  • I'm even more annoyed with Admiral, they've done exactly the same to me today! Mine has been cancelled, my insurance was £97.26 per month over the 12 month period. Now to get another quote the cheapest I can get is £277 per month. I hate the !!!!!!!s, I now have to sell the car! I actually cannot afford currently the £800 remaining on my policy & once the car is sold, I will probably not be able to afford one for a good few years, its only an S Reg Passat worth about £600. I am so !!!!ed, I even had the thing serviced for £130 not less than a week ago. I could actually cry!

They would only do this if you missed a monthly payment.

Easy way to sort this out is to go to their complaints department explain the fault lies with them and request they withdraw their fees. If no joy, tell them you will refer the case to the insurance ombudsman. Phone the ombudsman who will tell you what to do, he should give you a case number, whilst this is being investigated the company cannot pursue their claim.
