Anyone claimed on a Third Party Car Warranty?

Hi

I've been paying out for a car warranty and each time I have gone to claim they say either not covered, or it's Wear and Tear.

Has anyone ever claimed on one of these policies?

Surely most things that go wrong on a car 6 years old will be wear and tear, what other reason could there be for failure? I am sure you can claim a manufacturing fault after 6 years!!??

I am just about to buy a car, 6 yr old ford focus and I have got a quote £391 from Warranties Direct...I am really worried about getting another warranty but also worried in case something big goes on the car!

Any advice ??

Cheers
Darren

  • You're right about the "wear and tear" issue, but not all policies include it. If they do it tends to be used as a get-out clause. Check the small print very carefully before buying. In particular, try and work out what is not covered, rather than what is.

Alternatively, put the £400 aside and use it for repairs. If you choose the right car you will be very unlikely to need this over 12 months, particularly on a car like a Ford Focus. Add another £400 to it each year until you have a nice pot of money!

I think most of these warranties are poor value.

They all stipulate that the vehicle must "be serviced in accordance with ther manufacturers schedule". If a vehicle is serviced regularly most potential problems should be picked up then. So in effect you are paying twice for your guarantee of reliable motoring.

Fords are reasonably cheap to fix, keep your money in your back pocket.
  • The insurance type warranty is often not worth the paper it is printed on,some are ok but you need to read the small print, far better to buy a car were the garage gives its own warranty.

That is if you are buying an older car that does not have the manufacturers warranty still valid.
:) There are two sides to every story.
