Are Scottish Power trying to force me into a contract?

I've been with Scottish Power for a couple of years and no problems. I entered my meter reading online at the end of August with no problems as usual, I've never had a problem with communications. Today I receive a letter saying they've removed my online account and discount because they cannot contact me online because I don't have a live email, they say they sent me a letter and told me to respond within 28 days. I never received such a letter and I don't understand how they can say I don't have an active email when they emailed the confirmation of the meter reading and I received it. I tried to re-register and in order to do so I need to commit to a service plan and therefore contract. I just wondered if anyone else has had this situation? I work in IT so I am completely savvy when it comes to spam folders etc. so I feel like they are trying to put one over on me, or am I just paranoid? Can't get through to them, got to wait an hour for a call back.

Okay finally got hold of Scottish Power, apparently this was a computer error and they sent letters out to a lot of customers in error and cancelled their online accounts. They took my email address and my account will be reinstated within 48 hours exactly how it was. A word of warning to anyone who requests a callback, the hold music is extremely faint and you are put on hold for another 5 or 10 minutes before they connect you to an operator. I nearly hung up but thought I could hear very faint music so hung on and it eventually got louder. Shocking service and I'm not happy, apparently the same thing happened in May so that's why I am saying it is shocking, because they didn't stop it happening again, and I have had to waste an hour of my Saturday morning hanging around waiting to get hold of someone, not impressed.0

I had the same letter today even though have been getting their emails including this month and August...
I've tried calling them since about 9 this morning and keep getting cut off.
I guess they have done this to a lot of customers and now the lines are jammed...0 -

Same issue that I raised with them.
I tried to put a stop to this nonsense but it appears they couldn't care less.0 -
LOL backfoot. All the efforts you went to with EDF and now you're trying to sort out Scottish Power. I missed that you had moved to them, not keeping up. Still with EDF myself as got too embroiled in real life to think about changing. Will change at end of contract but maybe Scottish Power is one to avoid..0

The idea of my thread previously was to alert SP and customers to this error and hope that they would mend it at source. In my case, even though the source error had occurred three weeks before my letter was received, they had not even thought about stopping it.
Given this new thread, some time later,it is still going hopelessly and unnecessarilly wrong. This causes customers great inconvenience and creates ongoing complaints for SP.
It's one thing to get it wrong, but to perpetuate with further follow up action is crazy.:(0 -
I totally agree. Everyone accepts mistakes happen, but to repeat the same mistake is simply not good enough. I wish I could charge them for my time spent trying to sort it out, then maybe they would get their act together.0
