Reading to Heathrow---cheapest???

Anyone know how to get from reading Station to Heathrow airport cheaper?

The train from Cornwall to Reading costs £13.50

Yet the train from Reading to Heathrow costs £15.40 or £17.00 by bus.

Is there a local bus? I remember going from Uxbridge to Heathrow for £2 on a local bus...

Seems crazy paying 6 x £15.40 to get to the airport

Thanks

  • No local buses from Reading. The only bus is RailAir which can be £14 per adult in advance. It is a bit of a hassle to get from Reading to Heathrow by train as you must go via central London.

Bear in mind a minibus from Reading to Heathrow is about £50 from local taxi firms which may be more suitable for your group of 6.

There are cheaper local buses from Slough but that would mean paying more for the train and there's no guarantee your Cornwall train will stop there.

You can avoid Central London and change at Hayes and Harlington. As you will be travelling with First Great Western you could try FGW Groupsave.

    Think I sussed it.

Train to Hayes and Harlington is £13.50, same as reading. Then fron Hayes to Heathrow £5 by train, unless anyone knows of a bus?

Indeed. I think the fare is one pound if you have an oyster card.

Note that you will probably need to get off your train from Cornwall at Reading (unless it calls at Slough: not many do). Only slow trains from Reading call at Hayes, so it would be quicker to take a fast train from Reading to Slough, then a slow train on to Hayes.

There are also local buses between Slough and Heathrow, but they are less frequent than the trains from Hayes.

  • You can get the train from Reading to West Drayton station then get the local U3 bus which takes about 15 minutes. Very simple journey.
  • If you check on http://www.redspottedhanky.com (this is a better alternative to TheTrainLine) then you can get through tickets via RailAir which might be cheaper. You have to search specifically for "Heathrow Bus" rather than Heathrow Airport and check the route says "via Reading RailAir" and if you use any valid railcards it will reduce the price accordingly.

Obviously as you do not say where you are specifically travelling from in Cornwall I can not compare it to your current price, however a few random searchs from the South West shows it can work out cheaper than the £14 RailAir fare.

Thanks for everyones replies. I have booked tickets from Cornwall to Hayes and Harlington (change at Reading) as it was only £13.50 a ticket £8.90 with a railcard. (That aint bad:D)

We are staying at the Heathrow Travel Lodge on Bath Road, so I guess there is a bus, or taxi that goes that way?

The 140 bus right outside H&H station will take you to Bath Road at Harlington Corner, where you need to cross over and get a 105 or 111 or 81 or 222 bus to the hotel. To get to Heathrow central bus station next day you can get the 105 or 111 - or the N9 if very early

    It's £2 something a ride without Oyster
