Hi,
I have only worked in between july 09 to july 10
this form I started filling has a section in the beginning asking "year to - 5 april xxxx" - that xxxx - Should I fill that 2011 ? because the tax claim I am making falls in apr 10 to apr 11 in which I was not employed?
Thanks.

as the tax year falls between apr to apr I believe I am entitled to some ordinary income tax back - between apr 10 and june 10 (is this correct understanding ?)

Can I ask were you claiming any benefits before June 2009, and after June 2010?
If you were, then these payments will be taken into account when claiming any tax rebate.
What was your tax code whe you left employment in June 2010? Were you made redundant? Dismissed (whether end of fixed/temporary contract or actual dismissal for conduct etc)? or left voluntarily?
Why are you making a claim for a rebate against tax on savings and investments? (From your post there is no indication of why you are using this form). My countdown to christmas 2011 began when I discovered this forum, thank you everyone! :rudolf::xmastree::rudolf:0 -
The HMRC form you have in your post is R40, which is for claiming back any tax deducted from savings and investments.
Your tax code of 647L is a cumulative tax code, so you would have paid tax (pro rata) on any earnings over and above the personnal allowance threshold (which was £6470). Unless there was an X in the box next to your tax code.
You may be able to claim tax for the previous year 2009/2010, but I would doubt from 2010/2011, as your tax would be correct if you were employed by them from April to June (the start of the new tax year till you left), unless they had you ona BR code or as 647L X (or M1/W1 - they both indicate non-cumulative/emergency tax code).
Do you complete and file a self assesment? Maybe your accountant could help more.
I would contact HMRC in the first instance, although they are not always as helpful as they could be.

No I don't do my own taxes nor do I have an accountant.
But I do remember during that Apr to June I was paying the same level of tax as before as I recollect from my pay slip - no noticeable change in my net monthly pay.
The "total pay to date" on the P45 tax form is below £6470, if this helps ?
I thought between apr 09 to march 10, I would pay tax on income above 6470. And I presume what you are saying is as the company expects me to leave they would make allowance for this - but then surely they would not have charged me any tax between apr 10 and june 10 ?
And my reasoning was.. since my income between apr and june was below 6470 and not been employed since then, I should get all income tax paid for tax period 2010 and 2011.
Thank you.
Since you stopped working in June 2010 your P45 will apply to the 2010 / 2011 tax year (i.e. between 6 APR 2010 and 5 APR 2011) and hence the income and tax paid totals shown on the P45 will be for dates between 6 APR 2010 and JUN 2010 (only 2 to 3 months) in the 2010/11 tax year.
Since you say your tax code was 647L and the total income was less than £6470, then assuming you had no other taxable income during the 2010/11 tax year, you can recalim any tax that you paid (as shown on the P45) you should phone HMRC to ask them to pay you this refund.
When you stopped working in June 2010, didn't you sign on for Job Seekers Allowance and/or other benefits ?

Any JSA payments you would have received in the 2010/11 tax year (if applicable) would also need to be taken into account. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
