Can I work and claim housing & council tax benefit?

Hi I am in receipt of the full housing and council tax benefit, I am a full time mature student. Can I work 15 hours without the housing and council tax benefit being affected? Thanks

First of all I didn't think you could get HB if you were a student, that is quite a huge question off me lol.

Second, you can earn £5 per week before benefit is affected, after that any income you earn is taken off your benefit £ for £

Are you a lone parent or disabled?

Can you even get housing benefit as a full-time student? I was always under the impression being a full-time student made you ineligable.

And hello oldernotwiser nice to see you again ^^

You may be able to claim benefits if you're a lone parent, disabled or part of a student couple.

Does this disability include anxiety and depression? (just curious)

It's not the nature of the disability that matters, generally it's whether you qualify for the disability premiums (ie whether you are recognised as being disabled for benefits purposes).

It would depend on your other income and your household circumstances (not enough info provided to say for sure), but the short answer is probably not. Your earnings would be taken into account as income and would probably reduce your entitlement.

This working under 16 hour myth really bugs the nanas out of me, there are certain disregards but after the disregards are applied any income you get affects your benefit entitlement.
I made a mistake once, believeing people on the internet were my virtual friends. It won't be a mistake that I make again!
  • l think that the OP is ineligible for HB as she's not disabled or a lone parent. She was advised of this when she started her course and also when she first considered this plan 6 months ago. She also had a large sum of capital from VR which should affect means tested benefits if she's declared it.

Unfortunately, she seems to think that if she asks the same question often enough, she'll eventually be told that she's allowed to do this.

Do you still get the council tax discount if you are a full-time student but also work part-time?
