    The trivially simple method of minimising the risks of using free public wi-fi is not to use it at all!
    (This answer may not be appropriate in all circumstances, though...)
  • Yes, this will be a weak point in a lot of people's security, so anything that makes them understand the risks has to be useful.

    Would have been interesting if they had discussed 'paid-for' VPNs a bit more and maybe offered some recommendations.
    Now there's a minefield, lol

    To prevent attempted intrusion from other people on the connection use the free version of ZONEALARM, and when it detects a new public network put it in the Internet Zone, not Trusted Zone, (your home network should be put into Trusted), and adjust the security setting to max. That will block external attempts.
