thanks for the info, going to check the leak off pipes tomorrow. As Sceptic Peg predicts, House prices this week will be going up!.............................or down.0

Leak off pipes usually just lets the diesel drain back, and gives a lumpy start after a few cranks.
Also smells of diesel as they leak fuel out when running.
Crank sensor would have been another suspect, but it stores a fault code for it.0 -
Crank sensor was tested and working ok. That was my first thought but the rac man tested for me. I just hope its not going to be a gremlin that i can't find!
If it just turned over without it trying so hard to fire then i could narrow it down.
I don't know if the glow plugs would cause it to fail on a hot day as i thought they weren't needed until under zero degrees, or whether it sends a message to the ecu to stop the car starting?
thanks again. As Sceptic Peg predicts, House prices this week will be going up!.............................or down.0 -
If the ecu decides the car isn't starting, it usually turns off the fuel system entirely, so you wouldn't even get it trying to start. Same with the immobiliser.
Some glow plugs come on at any temperature, and even stay on for post heating nowadays. I don't specifically know about the zafira though.
Do you get a flashing light on the dash if there is a glow plug fault?0 -
no flashing lights on the dash, everything was as normal. As Sceptic Peg predicts, House prices this week will be going up!.............................or down.0

can smell diesel on turn over now and the glow plug light comes on at ignition and goes off as normal. Its so close to starting which is even worse.
Booked in for a garage to sort...As Sceptic Peg predicts, House prices this week will be going up!.............................or down.0 -
Just an update, i got the car started today, it then smoked terribly. After loads of checking it appears that the egr valve has caused it...As Sceptic Peg predicts, House prices this week will be going up!.............................or down.0

A bit late I know as I only just saw this 1.
1stly it wouldn't be the glowplugs or the circuit as the op had driven to the shop and a couple of mins later the car wouldn't start, under those conditions the plugs would not have been needed to start the car as it would still be warm.
2ndly I had a car with 4 duff ie open circuit plugs. Never failed to start 1st time, just gave off a bit of smoke for 10 secs which is why I looked for the problem.
Anyway another dam egr problem it seems, don't you just love 'em,I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -
