Faulty Laptop Keyboard

Options
My 4 month old laptop has developed an intermittent fault with the 'C', 'D', 'E' and '3' keys. It's becoming increasingly frequent and it is now impossible to type as the characters are replaced with some of the actions of the Function keys as well as other letters/characters, carriage returns, scrolls, etc (though a fairly consistent response depending on which key is pressed). The laptop is a Lenovo and hasn't been dropped or suffered a spillage.

Any advice? :o

Backup everything of importance to you, then have the retailer collect it from you for a repair.

nothing should be a home fix for a 4 month old laptop (unless it's been damaged by yourself)

It is as in so much that you can swap the keyboard yourself but its a new machine so it is the retailers responsibility to sort it.

I had a Dell Inspiron with exactly same problem. It was running on Vista. Anway I had given up any hope of fixing it then someone suggested formatting it. So I installed windows 7 and now the keys are all working. However not sure if it is a permanent fix as sometimes I have to hit the E key twice to get it to register. So it maybe just a software issue.

Try formatting and installing again and see if that solves it.

Very, very unlikely. As it's a column of keys it's almost certainly a hardware problem. A cable reseat might solve but probably a replacement keyboard. As it's a nearly new machine it's a problem for the seller to resolve.

And if you make a mess of this, don't expect the guarantee to cover it. But why spend all that time taking that risk when you don't need to?
