Hi FandF, you can open a Barclay's Basic account after you have gone BR as Coop will not let you open a cashminder account.

I have debts to barclays and co-op (credit card). The man at the charity helping me said he thought I would be ok with co-op as their credit card section is a different operation. He rang up the banking section and they said they would open an account no problem.
Maybe it's the same for barclaycard/barclays??
Will try opening later in the week and see how true that is as going br next Wed!!0 -
Hi, as of the 3rd of nov i became BR can anyone tell me if i will be able to keep my basic halifax account or will they freeze it? Hi kat65 and Welcome, there are only 2 BR friendly basic accounts.
Get all your cash out asap and open another account.

I'm about to be made bankrupt by a creditor, having failed to secure an IVA (rejected by HMRC at creditors' meeting) and am wondering if it will be possible to maintain two bank accounts.
I already have a basic account with Barclays, which I use for business expenses and am wondering if it's worth setting up a Co-op Cashminder for my household expenses. I'm self-employed and would prefer to keep separate accounts, but not sure how the OR would view this.
The bankruptcy hearing is scheduled for next week, so I don't have a lot of time to get things in order. Any advice would be greatly received. Many thanks.0 -

It would be perfectly fine (keeping business and household expenses separate is a wise thing todo!), providing you get the cashminder account opened before the bankruptcy and whatever you do, don't mention bankruptcy in your application! (The co-op may reject the application if you do).
Barclays may even allow you to have two cash card accounts, no internet banking though!0 -

Totally agree with above advice.....I use the co op account as I had Barclays as a creditor
You must open asap BEFORE going BR and don't mention anything about going to go BR
Co-op account as been fantastic....on-line banking, use of post office for counter stuff and I have had payment rejected- with no bank charge!0 -
Thanks for the advice. I'm curious that you both suggest I not mention bankruptcy when applying for the account. It's no problem doing this as I'm not actually bankrupt yet, but I thought that Barclays and Co-op are bankrupt-friendly, so to speak.
Should I close my accounts with Santander? I currently have a current account and two (nearly empty) savings accounts with them. I gather that these accounts will be frozen and anything in them would go to the OR once my bankruptcy goes through. If that's the case, I guess I'd be better off closing the accounts before that happens and holding on to the cash until the OR confirms that he/she has no interest in my Barclays/Co-op accounts.0 -
The Co-Op are fine about you keeping the account open once bankrupt, but won't let you open one as a bankrupt and will probably reject you if they know the account is being applied for due to bankruptcy.
Just leave the Santander accounts, the OR will write to them and they will close the accountNo need to go about closing old bank accounts
