Just to be clear, if you owe any bank money and have money in an account with the same bank on the day of bankruptcy then they can use the right of set off to take the money in the bank account. So if you owe them money open the account the day after the bankruptcy.

  • Hi becky d

I was discharged in April this year, and I've just opened a Co-op Cashminder account no trouble at all.
  • Hi Becky,Nationwide cash account.Just take a stroll down to the High St,pop into Nationwide, ask for an advisor, and some privacy if you like. And with a 100pound deposite you will have an account that gives you standing orders.
There is no need to say anything to your present bank at the moment, they will not find out about your BR until at least 1 month after your Bankruptcy case.
Be honest with the official receiver, they will not judge you,but if you leave anything out they can really mess you up credit wise in future years.
Remember, your debts are no longer your problem, let the OR and adminstrator deal with it,relax.
Your new account number with nationwide will be given to you as soon as you open the account, but you will not be able to use it for 2 weeks, although, you will be able to have your wages paid into the new account straight away.
Im guessing that your bank is being pretty bad to you with charges,so get your money out of there asap and get your new account at nationwide.
As long as you cooperate with the receiver and administrators of your BR,any account that is closed is normally re opened in 48 hours.
Hope you have an understanding family/partner,I did, thank the lord.
And remember, the best things in life, really are free,or nearly.A loving family, true friendship, sitting in a park on a warm Septembers day and a blooming nice cup o tea.
Dont make yourself as ill as I did with worry.if you need any more advice, message me on this thread.
Good luck, and the very best of human love,Lawrence,Dagenham.
  • Dagenhamlarry, Nationwide are no longer BR friendly and will close the account when they are advised you are BR. The only 2 truely BR friendly accounts are the Co-op Casminder account and Barclays Cash Card account.

Hi Tigerfeet,Thats what I was told when I went to them, but they still gave me an account.
A friend was made bankrupt 12 months ago and he went with the CO-OP and was given account number same day and able to use account on arrival of card in the post.So maybe Becky should try them first. Thanks for the update.
Maybe I slipped through with the Nationwide, still, worth a try.

Unfortunately Nationwide have now changed their stance on BR. I was with them pre BR and was not allowed any type of account at all, however now that I am discharged I have been able to open a basic account with them.

I am with Co-Op have been for years. As for Nationwide and Natwest, they both opened savings accounts for me then closed them within a month as I was BR!!! apparently discharged BR aren't allowed to save!

  • Hello everyone,

Would really appreciate some advice...It's looking like I will have to go bankrupt rather than an IVA in the next month or two and I'm trying to plan as much as possible in advance to minimise effect on money during the period that accounts are frozen etc.

I understand I need to open a new basic account and the 2 are co-op and Barclays but:

    I owe money to Smile
    and
    I owe money to Barclaycard

Does anyone have any experience of this? Will co-op definitely not give me an account as that would be the best option (online banking and local branch) and will Barclays also not offer me an account due to Barclaycard debt?

Otherwise I guess the only option is one of those pay-monthly "guaranteed" accounts? :-( As if there isn't enough stress/stigma from having to go through this!?!

    Thank you,
    FandF
