Enough momentum can quite easily overcome a handbrake if it's only been set to hold the car on a flat surface.

I'm just wondering if the Van driver did it deliberately, was on the phone or just had quadraspaz moment at the wheel.

Shocking stuff though, you here about this all the time, but now it's been caught on CCTV.

How strange. Defo looks like there's no handbrake on though (and not in gear) as it just launches like a snooker ball, and there's no deceleration. Van driver left in a rush, going by the soot coming out as he leaves, but apart from that, to my eyes, it looks deliberate. Need to have a word with the driver to get a proper answer...
  • the handbrake looks to be on at least a bit , it drags a wheel on the grass.

I reckon find out how many clicks you use on the handbrake when parked, drive along at 20mph and pull the handbrake lever up that many notches. I doubt you'd stop or even lock up the wheels.

UNLESS your in a 2004 Toyota Corolla, which will lock the rear wheels if you so much as sneeze near the handbrake lever :p

Definitely deliberate, but the weird thing is, check the front of the van for damage/crumple - none!!!!
I would have expected damage, possibly leaving the van immobile.

    but in your 'test'
the brake is having to overcome the forward momentum and mass of the car
when the car is hit it only has to hold on more than the tyre has traction on the road.
  • Great work by the van driver. He's clearly doing us all a favour by moving a car that some idiot has parked opposite a T-junction.
