Heinz. BT 1280 and BT privacy issues.

Hi, I have just come off phone to B.T. I was trying to arrange B.T. privacy without affecting my CPS with Primus. They said that privacy was only available to customers who had their calls with B.T. I said that it was still possible to make a calls with B.T. if one had a C.P.S arrangement with, for example, Primus by using the 1280 prefix. He then said that B.T. had stopped the use of 1280 because of customers abusing its' use, so it was no longer possible to do this. I am wondering if this is true or just misinformation from a sales person ( he offered me free evening and weekend calls, no monthly fee but my C.P.S. arrangement would be cancelled). I will go on BT website to see if i can find anything regarding above.

    You were lied to.

If you have Primus CPS at the moment, just dial a 1280 prefix* for an 01, 02, 03, 0845 or 0870 call at the weekend and then check your BT online account a day or so later.

    * I do that every weekend (or rather my Orchid does) and that's how I retain free BT Caller Display.

I didn't think you had to speak to anyone to 'sign up' for BT Privacy (Caller Display and TPS registration). It appears 0800 121 8000 still works for the automated procedure.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • I thought he might not be telling the truth so i used the bt online chat facility and got the same answer, and that it was stopped in 2009! I think i will e-mail them to see if they are prepared to lie in writing!

I had started to request the bt privacy online but noticed at the last minute that it said by completing the order for bt privacy that all my calls would come back to bt. I assumed that the automated telephone request would do the same. I have just rung that number and it goes through to an advisor (currently busy) rather than an automated service, same thing the other day, so requested call back, which led to the original conversation above.! Have you recently tried that number? because it is not working for me.

BTW, should i be able to get the 12 month line rental, upfront payment deal, without them taking my calls back to b.t.?

Yes, I have just this minute called my VOIP line from my PSTN line using the 1280 prefix and, having switched Charge Advice on, I received the call back telling me the length and alleged cost of my call (Charge Advice has not been updated for years so gives spurious cost advice) - so I know 1280 works to force an individual call back onto BT despite the fact that my default calls carrier is my CPS calls provider, Primus.

However, RatAtAt and locky123 mentioned on here a few days ago that they has been able to get LRS by calling (rather than using the online service) and insisting upon CPS not being removed. Bear in mind that paper-free discount is lost if you opt for LRS though.

  • Thanks, I meant have you tried the 0800 121 8000 to make an automated request for bt privacy, which just put me in a queue to speak to an advisor. Good to have confirmation that 1280 works though.
    Sorry, what does LRS mean?

Yes, I tried 0800 121 8000 and started what appeared to be an automated process - but then had to abort because I already have BT Privacy.

LRS = Line Rental Saver (the 12 months in advance thing you mentioned).

Just to add, BT have not stopped 1280, I used it yesterday for an 0845 number, my CPS is with Virgin, I have made a few calls via 1280 over the last few months using 1280 at weekends and never been charged.

    From my last bill,August;-

If you think about it, it would be a bizarre move to stop it anyway - it's the means by which subscribers can override their CPS calls provider and make calls (possibly at cost) via BT.

OK, most of us here use it to get free Caller Display and/or basic 1571 but the potential to gain some call revenue remains.
