If you don't expect to work again before the nest tax year claim straight away otherwise, if you can afford to wait, it's prob easier to claim after the end of the tax year.

Complete a P38 in holiday time, do this only if you do not work during other times of the year, and you will not pay tax during this time.

Other times of the year you will pay tax the same as everyone else, but should contact the tax office to claim back the over payment in April when they recieve P60's from your employer/s.

You've got 6 years to make a claim. If you go the https://www.hmrc.gov.uk and look for a form R40. They're pretty simple to fill in. Submit one for each tax year and you should get your money back.

Argh, where should I post this? The tax office listed on my payslips, the tax office local to my term address or my home address? Or somewhere else entirely? I am so confused!
I overpaid by hundreds of pounds! Can't wait for it back :T

    Hi,

I recently did a 5 day medical trial at university and was meant to be paid £120 for it. However, when the money came through it was £96, so after contacting the university I was told that I had been taxed and I could claim the money back if I ring up the tax office.

Oh I don't have a job apart from this, by the way. I know if you've earned so much a year as a student you can get taxed.

Now, I've looked at the tax office website and can't exactly who I should ring up and what to say :p I think I found the right number the other day but I stupidly didn't bookmark the url and cant back to the page. Will I need to provide more information to them, as well? Because I literally I have nothing in writing with regards to the payment - it just went straight into my account.

    Any help most appreciated

right brundle, you have to get the inland revenues number local to you and phone them, tell them your situation, if you haven't worked before i'm not sure what happens then but if you have they should have you on file and can get it sorted for you, as you shouldn't be getting taxed at all should take maybe a month to get it in your bank but its worth a call.
